Learning how to sew is a valuable skill. While we don't see many home economics classes in schools anymore, the sewing arts are making a comeback. Many young adults are enrolling in classes that teach skills like sewing and cooking. But what about our children and youth? There are plenty of reasons why every child should learn how to sew.

Explore Creativity and achieve a sense of Accomplishment

In Basic Hand Stitching students will
• Learn basic hand stitching: straight stitch, back stitch and whip stitch
• Learn how to repair a hem, close a ripped seam as well as how to add a patch to clothing
• Learn how to sew on a button

Description:

Sweet grass basket weaving is a long standing tradition in the low country of South Carolina. Today if you drive along Johnny Dodds Blvd. in Mt. Pleasant or go to the City Market in downtown Charleston you will see women making and selling their sweet grass creations. This tradition must continue to be passed down! We need you to learn about the history of sweet grass basket weaving. We will investigate sweet grass baskets from our permanent collection. Our basket weavers will make their own simple, chic and natural basket and will have a choice of a round, triangular or square design.

Archaeology Adventure poster

Description:

Archaeology Adventure
We have thieves at work at the Museum and we need your help! They are stealing from an excavation site where our museum archaeologist has come across a spectacular find of artifacts. We will need top excavators on this. It is only matter of time before the items that were stolen will be sold on the black market. We only have a day to go back in time to figure out what type of artifacts are at the excavation site so that we can help the authorities find the artifacts and return them safely.
